How to Practice
Daily Scripture in One Word

A simple, faithful daily practice rooted in the ancient Catholic tradition of Lectio Divina.

The Foundation

A Practice the Church Has Used
for Over 1,800 Years.

Lectio Divina is a Latin term meaning "divine reading." It is the ancient Catholic practice of reading, reflecting, and praying with Scripture — not to study it intellectually, but to encounter the living God within it.

For over 1,800 years the Church has used this practice to draw the faithful into a deeper relationship with God through His Word. Pope Benedict XVI described it as "the diligent reading of Sacred Scripture accompanied by prayer — an intimate dialogue in which the person reading hears God who is speaking."

Daily Scripture in One Word is Catholic by Faith's own expression of Lectio Divina. It takes this 1,800 year old tradition and makes it simple enough to practice every day, in the middle of real life. One Gospel. One word. Every day.

What Is in Every Post

Everything You Need
Is Already There.

Each Daily Scripture in One Word post is a complete daily practice. You do not need any prior knowledge of Scripture or the Catholic faith to begin. Everything is provided for you.

Here is what you receive in every post:

  • The daily Gospel — the same reading proclaimed at Catholic Mass today, in every church, across the world
  • The One Word — drawn from that Gospel, chosen to speak to the universal human heart
  • The connection — how that word speaks to what any of us may be carrying, longing for, or needing today
  • Remember this — an anchor quote to carry with you through the day
  • How to live it out today — one simple, honest way to put the word into action
  • A prayer — written and ready, so that even on the days you do not know what to say, the words are already there

Going deeper? Every post also includes a Bible verse chosen from anywhere in Scripture to speak directly to the word, and a reference from the Catechism of the Catholic Church for further study. These are not required for the daily practice — they are there for anyone ready to go further.

Your Daily Practice

How to Practice It Every Day.

You can practice Daily Scripture in One Word in as little as ten minutes. All you need is the post, a quiet moment, and a willingness to listen.

1
Read

Open the post and read the daily Gospel slowly. This is the same Scripture the whole Catholic Church is hearing today, in every language, across the world. You are not reading alone. Let that settle before you move on.

2
Reflect in Silence

After reading, pause. Set the post down for a moment and sit in silence with what you just heard. This is the heart of Lectio Divina. God speaks first. No commentary. No explanation. Just the Scripture and the stillness. Even sixty seconds of silence is enough. Let the Word breathe before you move forward.

3
Name the Word

Look at the One Word in the post. This is the word that rose from the Gospel — chosen to name something true about where you are today. Hold it. Say it quietly if you like. Let it land before you read further.

4
Relate It to the Catechism

Read the Catechism reference included in the post. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is the living teaching of the Church. Seeing how the Church understands this truth gives the word deeper roots. You do not need to be a theologian to receive it. Just read it slowly and let it speak.

5
Connect It to Real Life

Read the connection section of the post. This is where the word is shown to speak to the universal human heart — to what any of us may be carrying, longing for, or needing today. You may find yourself thinking "this is exactly where I am." That is the Word of God meeting you where you are.

6
Pray

Pray the prayer in the post. It is already written for you. Read it slowly, as your own. If other words come, let them come. The written prayer is a starting place — a door into the conversation, not the whole conversation. End with a moment of quiet. Let God respond in whatever way He chooses.

7
Live It Out Today

Read the "how to live it out today" section. Choose one thing — just one — and carry it into your day. Not a list. Not a project. One small, faithful act rooted in the word you received today. This is where the practice becomes a life.

Going Deeper

For Those Who Want to Go Further.

Every post includes two elements for deeper study. They are not required for the daily practice — they are an invitation for anyone ready to go further.

  • The Bible verse — a verse chosen from anywhere in Scripture that speaks directly to the word. Use it for meditation, journaling, or memorization.
  • The Catechism reference — the specific CCC paragraph that connects to the word. Read it slowly. Sit with it. Let it deepen your understanding of the faith you already hold.

These are not requirements. They are gifts. Take them when you are ready.

The Bible Study

The Same Practice. Together.

Daily Scripture in One Word is a practice you can do alone every day. But it was always meant to be shared.

The Catholic by Faith Bible study takes the same seven steps into community. Once a month, people gather around one word, one Scripture, and one truth from the Catechism — and practice together.

Every Catholic is welcome. The cradle Catholic ready to go deeper. The one who stepped away and came back. The one who is just beginning.

Each gathering includes a coloring sheet to help quiet the noise so God's Word has room to speak, and a word card to take home and place somewhere visible — so the word stays with you until the next gathering.
